Gems of the Galaxy Zoos—A Wide-ranging Hubble Space Telescope Gap-filler Program*

چکیده

We describe the Gems of Galaxy Zoos (Zoo Gems) project, a gap-filler project using short windows in Hubble Space Telescope's schedule. As with previous snapshot programs, targets are taken from pool based on position; we combine objects selected by volunteers both Zoo and Radio citizen-science projects. uses exposures Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to address broad range topics galaxy morphology, interstellar-medium content, host galaxies active galactic nuclei, evolution. Science cases include studying interactions, backlit dust galaxies, post-starburst systems, rings peculiar spiral patterns, outliers usual color-morphology relation, Green Pea compact starburst double radio sources extended emission-line regions around nuclei. For many these science categories, final selection larger list used public input via voting process. Highlights date prevalence tightly-wound structure blue, apparently early-type nearly complete Einstein ring group lens, redder components at lower surface brightness surrounding starbursts, high-probability examples hosting large sources.

COSMOS : Hubble Space Telescope Observations

The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) was initiated with an extensive allocation (590 orbits in Cycles 12-13) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for high resolution imaging. Here we review the characteristics of the HST imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and parallel observations with NICMOS and WFPC2. A square field (1.8⊓⊔) has been imaged with single-orbit ACS I-F814W expos...

Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of the Schwartz

Schwartz 82 (IM Lupi; HBC 605; IRAS 15528-3747) is an M0 T Tauri star located within the Lupus star forming clouds at a distance of ∼190 pc (Wichmann et al. 1998). It is one of four young stellar objects in a small CO(1-0) core near the extreme T Tauri star RU Lupi (Tachihara et al. 1996). Unlike its more famous neighbor, Sz 82 displays only a modest amount of emission-line activity, with an Hα...

First Hubble Space Telescope Observations of the Brightest Stars in the Virgo Galaxy

As part of both the Early Release Observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Key ProjeCt on the Extragalactic Distance Scale, we have obtained multiwavelength BVR WFPC2 images for the face-on Virgo cluster spiral galaxy M100 = NGC 4321. We report here preliminary results from those observations, in the form of a color-magnitude diagram for -11,500 stars down to V 27 mag and a luminosi...

The Recent Evolution of the Dwarf Starburst Galaxy NGC 625 from Hubble Space Telescope Imaging

New HST/WFPC2 imaging of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC625 is presented. These data, which are 80% complete to V and I magnitudes of 26.0 and 25.3 respectively, allow us to study the recent star formation history of NGC625. Using outlying red giants stars, we derive a tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distance modulus of 27.95±0.07. This corresponds to a distance of 3.89±0.22 Mpc, placing this...

Intelligent Scheduling of Hubble Space Telescope Observations

This paper describes the S PIKE system, a general framework for scheduling which has been developed by the Space Telescope Science Institute for NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Efficient use of astronomical observatories is very important to the scientific community: the demand for research-grade telescopes far exceeds the supply. The need for efficient scheduling is especially keen for sp...
